Poem "See"

"see"

half-timbered cottage / in the cottonwoods and the cherry blossoms
sharply trained sporting dogs
and you in your riding clothes
my inner self knows
that your inner dimension / is more than just serenity to mask your tension
the simple sense / of elegance / in your style
is an aesthetic / that you project forward from behind your eyes
or that’s how i see you through my kaleyedescope

a-frame cabin / in the mountainside pines and the quaking aspens
red single-cab four by four toyota
and you in your hiking clothes
my inner self totally knows
that your inner dimension / is more than just face paint and long french braids
the hooded sweatshirts / that we wear / are like turtle shells / over our feathers
for when it’s wet and dreadful out
or that’s how i feel you through my oscilloscope

i don’t really care / how the tetris blocks fall
all i want is some translucence in this wall
i don’t really care / which appearance you take
just as long as i know you when i see you

concrete and coffee machines / and bottomless countertops
rising steam to meet the raindrops
old leather sofas and murphy beds / you in your retro-futuristic threads
my inner self knows
that your inner dimension / is more than just the makeup you up on
for the role you play
make no mistake / i know that you’ve orchestrated this creation as a match
to catch the way that you really feel

but our exoskeletons / are shells that we wear for protection
to control external perception / a little bit of misdirection

the real you / is really sparkly stars and mocha and blue
the lighter beats in the rhythm pattern / that get the atoms moving
are the electricity and longing and you

Star Wars Expanded Universe Characters

I posted a new editorial write up, 'Film-Usable Star Wars Expanded Universe Characters,' at ComicBookMovie.com as Wolf38. The 'Expanded Universe' refers to material from books, comics, video games and so forth - i.e. sources other than the primary films and Clone Wars television shows. The write up short summary is:
Plenty of intriguing actors have tested for roles in Star Wars Episode VII. In spite of some hints, those roles themselves remain a mystery. Here, I survey established non-film characters who could reasonably make the jump to screen...
I got really psyched to make this list of characters, partly because it allowed me to take a trip to nostalgialand. So that part was fun. However, in the comments, someone brought up some some uncanny...matching points between the subject matter in all of the books so far, the timeline, and the fact that the new film 'Episode VII' is going to be set thirty years after Return of the Jedi. The more that I thought about it and looked into it, it totally rallied my mind.

The question is still whether or not all of the stories/characters from the books (in general at least - I'm sure that some of the bad ones will be ignored) will be retained as part of the canon or 'official continuity' feeding into the new films. I have a hard time believing that on certain levels. But on the other hand, it could happen. Which is to say that the characters, both old and new, who are sill alive in the books thirty years on...they could very well be the roles being cast for Episode VII.

I'm a little bit freaked out.

Poem "Skyhook"

"skyhook"

what is up / am i some sort of parasite / is that it
that i make a habit / of draining my own life
what's the endgame
can't keep crashing
the method to the madness is insufficient to rationalize it
it's moments like these / you close your eyes
and go back to the last hopeful thing that you can call to mind
so much of this is a cycle / for better or worse
falling is easy / climbing is much harder work

damn it / are you some sort of vampire / is that it
that you make a habit / out of draining the lifeblood from me
do you think that you set the stage for some sort of reckoning
but i’ve turned away / and i’m not looking back
i’ve got a red light on the horizon
and better uses for this energy
this vector is projecting forward / these guns keep the peace

i wrote my name in my own blood
before it bled away in the wash
and i lost my sense of identity / in all the descending
but this time / back it up / prick my finger
in binary digits / stored on this thumb drive
write it in silver / poured down thru the door of the airlock
at the foot of the sliver of the crescent moon
in a hexagonal pattern / inscribed on my iris
that projects elvish writing / on the wall / when my pupils dilate

it turns out / that the moon is waxing gibbous
i’m glowing thru my diamond skin / it just doesn't show
because of the invisibility that i wear as my mortal cloak
it’s just the mechanism / by which i survive

but if it’s imperfect / it’s okay / there’s still hope / there’s still a way

i’ll let the batteries run down low / and end it on this note

Poem "Activate"

"activate"

stood there for a minute / didn't sense anything
that was only the intermission before the beginning
jumped to a conclusion / but lump it in with the confusion
maybe we weren't wasting time / maybe we were just clearing our minds

for this

this is it / this clicks / it’s an open secret / you can’t keep it
picked it back up after the fact / enough of this / more of that

a little elevation is all it takes / to see a sapphire instead of the lake
lapis lazuli / reflecting the sky
a little distance is all it takes / to see the trees for texture
and your smile as a net / to catch the light

attach myself to a magnet / attracted to the sky
actually to just a single fragment of the light that greets your eyes
seventh star to the right / and straight on to tomorrow
perfectly aligned / straight through an ancient hollow
you weren't wasting your time / you were just gracing mine

giving this

kiss you when you smile / bathe in liquid sunshine
like the sensory equivalent of that riff from 'sweet child o mine'
you activate / the primitive quintessential center of my brain

exchange a grin / with christina hendricks
wraithdt painted a scene / from the courtship of princess leia
norwegian friend / nobel prize / doe eyes
i speak in elliptical sentences / riffs like this / scratch that, it’s pretentious

if you get a little closer to the sun / it'll do / to melt your wax / and get you drunk
if you get into / the golden and the blue / if you get above
like those lions and eagles / with the talons and the teeth / and the adorable names
and the milky feathers and golden manes
it's great
and if you have something to say about it / it's all in fun

Damn it Chloe, we don't have time!

(The new show title is very reminiscent of 'Die Another Day.' But more appealing on multiple levels.)

Kicks

There is a particular type of experience, in which you become aware of an opportunity of great interest, only too late to do anything about it. I've had such an experience before, more than once. It's kind of like amnesiatic deja vu for me, I guess, because I can't recall offhand what was involved in previous instances, but I know what I'm dealing with tonight.

I'm not really sure why, but lately I've been reading a lot of NBA (basketball) related articles, rankings and lists. Back in the 90's, I was an obsessive fan, but these days my hoops dabbling is occasional at best. Anyway though, tonight I was reading about the NBA in the 70's, which got me to thinking about the ABA (American Basketball Association) which then tripped my mind to the great Nike Roswell Rayguns commercial from 2002. The Rayguns being a fictional ABA team populated by then-current NBA players, most notably Vince "Dr. Funk" Carter. Great high-concept commercial, and being a graphic-design enthusiast, I have always loved the Rayguns' logo:

So, I did a bit of googling to see if there had ever been any Rayguns merchandise. Lo and behold, I came across this article, dated January 24, 2013. Last year, Nike released a set of Rayguns-themed retro shoes. So very recent, and yet I sensed before even checking...so far away. The market for collectible basketball shoes is insane. The going prices are certifiable, and I have yet to become wealthy. It may not have even made a difference had I not been a year too late, but I still felt like a cruelly twisted victim here.

(Just to note - I'm joking in my use of words like "cruel" and "victim" - this is intended purely in good fun. May pain is real but knowingly ridiculous.)

But because I'm a glutton for punishment, I subjected myself to an eBay search. Among many listings of unsurprisingly pricey kicks, I find these beauties:

NIKE BARKLEY POSITE MAX PRM ALL STAR 2013 RAYGUN AREA 72

That's not the actual pair listed in the item, but it's the same model. Wild, mesmerizing color scheme. There are two pairs left in my size, Buy It Now for $334.95. A sane person would shake their head and move on with practical resignation. But I actually passed a moment considering the possibility of spending money that I don't have to buy this, something that I absolutely don't need.

And here's the kicker (pun intended! as always) - I would literally wear them. Keeping a pair of great shoes locked away in a hermetically-sealed vault is counter intuitive to me. It would be like recovering the bodies of extraterrestrials from a crashed ship and storing them underground, public denials and all. These babies need to walk some streets.

I love interesting, limited-edition or deluxe things. I love aliens. And there is a nearly-forgotten part of me that never completely died, that longingly drools over cool basketball shoes. These kicks are all of those things in one, and I want them so bad that it almost hurts. That's so pathetic, but it's true. If I were a wealthy man, I would buy a pair and wear them on a UFO pilgrimage(s). Just one of those things that I would get a kick out of doing.

Also, I've been listening to Dido's No Angel album while typing this, because the song "Here With Me" was what played over the credits of the WB show Roswell. I should probably make a playlist for that UFO pilgrimage. That'd be cool.

Poem "Brush"

now that it’s over / i need to be somewhere else
maybe i’m finally ready to return to myself
maybe i can be at peace / at least if nothing else

now that it’s over / i’ll take my old table in the corner
have a drink / and lean back / and breathe in the smoke and sap
in the low lights of the old fires

as i sing / i want to run my fingers / over the texture of your sweater
as i play / i want to send my voice / into a resonating chamber

what i’m looking for / is the ground beneath the floor
and the clouds above this roof

now that i’m clear / i need to get back to basics
in the open air / in a pair of retro asics
it can be as simple as that

now that you’re near / i need to spend some time with you
brush my fingers through your hair / breathe in
thread myself / between the needles of the trees

as i dream / i want to feel / the brushfire inside my mind
when i wake / i want the chill / of a morning in the pines

what i’m looking for / is a blade acute enough / to draw my blood
and a leach to bleed me free
spike me with a rush / let the tension gush
like a river underneath a suspension bridge
connect the dots / and tear them apart
in an undisciplined curve of fission

when i wake / i want to feel the chill / and the thrill / of the winds of change

what i’m looking for / is the ground beneath the floor
and the clouds above this roof

now that it’s over / i need to be somewhere else
maybe i’m finally ready to return to myself

What's The Name Of That One Band?

Well, this is kind of random (even by my standards) but tonight, I found myself obsessed with trying to remember the name of a particular musical group. I often make lists of artists that I'd like to check out at some point. I have spreadsheets full of bands and solo artists, organized by decade, gender and so forth. I've been on a 90's nostalgia kick recently, which has involved me revisiting music that I listened to back then as well as reading up on bands that I never listened to but have retroactively become interested in checking out. Better late than never.

As it happens, through the course of browsing Amazon, I remembered this one band that I had read about and been intrigued by a couple of years ago. I think that my memory may have been spurred by the cover art of certain albums by Lush and Belly, among others. A certain similar mix of colors and very general aesthetic. I could remember almost exactly what the mystery band's CD looked like - a selection of sugary candy, some of it red, surrounded by white frosting - but not what it was called.

Including photos of the aforementioned albums - Lush's Lovelife and Belly's Star - will ultimately paint my thought process in an even more random light (they don't look all that similar, I suppose) but this post needs pictures, so here they are:

I had two other mental leads. First, the word "cherry" was involved in either the band name or the album title. Unfortunately, I could not remember which for sure, and there are way too many musical matches that come up when you search for "cherry." Like, hundreds of pages. I tried any number of searches on Amazon, Wikipedia and the web in general, to no avail.

Second, I remembered that the singer was more famous for her subsequent musical career. It wasn't Fergie or Britta Phillips of Luna, both of whom I double-checked. I felt like I could just almost remember. It was so close, but so far away, one of those situations in which you're probably better off abandoning the search and coming back later. But I was determined to keep trying, then and there.

(To clarify, Fergie was previously in a group called Wild Orchid, which is a faintly similar to the name that I was trying to remember. For reference, here's their album:)

I knew that my mystery group was basically an "alternative pop-rock band" from the 90's. Thus-ly did I finally find what I was looking for. I did a Google search and wound up at the List of alternative rock artists Wikipedia entry. There are a lot of artists, but I started scanning through them, confident that if my band was listed, I would recognize the name. Sure enough, down in the E's, I had my match: Eve's Plum.

This is the part where I have to laugh at myself, so that if anyone else laughs at me, at least I'm laughing with them. Anyway, that's an odd band name. The album that I was looking for in particular is called Cherry Alive. And the singer is Colleen Fitzpatrick, better known as Vitamin C. That's really funny. I think that I must have gotten curious about Vitamin C at some point in the past, and read her biography on Allmusic. Then, I read some complimentary reviews of the album in question and thought, "Hey, that sounds kinda cool." I love power pop, with guitars and melodies in equal measure, and that's what Cherry Alive sounds like.

Without further ado, then, here's my momentary Holy Grail:

Looks sugary and good, right? Hey, I enjoy good, pure pop music in reasonable doses. And this supposedly has guitars, too!

Just to prove that I like rock music and have other posters on my bedroom walls besides Fergie, I cite my recent acquisition of this album:

(I haven't listened to it yet, though, so if it's horrible in some way, I'm still in the dark.)

So, kids, it turns out that even in the Internet Age it's possible to get lost. If you don't have any song lyrics or other clearly defined names or titles to go by, you actually still might be unable to identify music. But if you maintain dogged determination and think about it from every angle, there's a decent chance that your search might have a happy ending.

And that's how I found your mother Aunt Vitamin C. Don't worry. I'll get to your mother eventually.

Fantastic Four Fan Poster

The past couple of weeks have seen some long-awaited casting news for Fox's long-in-development Fantastic Four reboot, set to reach theaters next summer. While not everything is sealed in stone yet, officially speaking, we can move forward assuming that the main cast will consist of Miles Teller (The Spectacular Now) as Reed Richards, Kate Mara (House of Cards) as Susan Storm, Michael B. Jordan (Chronicle) as Johnny Storm and Jamie Bell (Man on a Ledge) as Ben Grimm. Their heroic nicknames being, in the same order, Mr. Fantastic, the Invisible Girl/Woman, the Human Torch, and the Thing. Here they are:

I won't get into the debates that are raging in the fan sector, but suffice it to say, the aforementioned actors are younger than the Fantastic Four are typically portrayed as being. That suggests that the "take" on their origin story this time may be influenced by the Ultimate Fantastic Four, a relatively recent and re-interpretive spin on the characters. That's okay with me. I really like this cast. I've only seen Teller and Jordan onscreen, but I have no reason to disapprove of Mara or Bell. I guess that I need to overcome my Kevin Spacey aversion and watch some House of Cards.

But enough talk; check out this lovely fan-made poster created by MrSteiners on deviantART:

(The Thing used is the Michael Chiklis version from the previous films, for practical reasons. Given Bell's history with motion capture filming, it seems probable that the new version of the Thing will be a blend of actor and CGI similar to the Hulk portrayed in The Avengers.)

I love the overall composition, and the watermark-styled "4" in the background that echoes the current poster art for Fox's upcoming X-Men: Days of Future Past. Hopefully, there will be a cleverly staged Fantastic Four/X-Men crossover in the near future, as has been hinted.

Anyway, there are few things that I love more than unofficial-but-awesome film poster art, and this example makes me very happy.
